- Where emoji come from: In 1999, Shigetaka Kurita drew 176 tiny pictures for Japanese phones. Japan had earlier sets, but his became the famous one. Emoji is Japanese: e means picture, moji means character. So it only sounds like emotion. The two words aren't related!
