The Big Aha stories
- Eleven days without landing: In October 2022, a young bar-tailed godwit took off from Alaska. It flew across the Pacific for 11 days and one hour, without ever landing. It touched down in Tasmania, Australia, about 8,425 miles (13,560 km) away. Guinness World Records lists it as the longest nonstop migration by a bird. - The animals that survived open space: Tardigrades, nicknamed water bears, are tiny animals about 0.5 mm (0.02 in) long. In 2007, scientists sent dried-out tardigrades into orbit on a space mission. For ten days, they sat in the raw vacuum of space. Back on Earth, water woke them up: the first animals known to survive the vacuum of space.
