The Big Aha stories
- The tomato that went to the Supreme Court: In 1883, America put a tax on imported vegetables, but not on fruit. A New York produce company paid the tax on its tomatoes, then sued to get the money back. Tomatoes are fruit, it said. In 1893, the case reached the Supreme Court. The judges agreed a tomato is a fruit to a botanist. But people eat it like a vegetable, with dinner, not as dessert. So under the tax law, it was a vegetable. - When America banned sliced bread: On July 7, 1928, a bakery in Chillicothe, Missouri, sold the first bread sliced by a machine. The machine was built by Otto Rohwedder, a former jeweler from Iowa. Years earlier, a fire had destroyed his first one. Sliced bread took off. Within a few years, most bread sold in America came sliced. Then, in January 1943, the government banned sliced bread to save resources in the war. People complained, and the ban ended in March.
