The Big Aha stories
- The state that almost changed pi: A doctor in Indiana claimed he had solved a famous old geometry puzzle. In 1897, a lawmaker turned his idea into a bill. Hidden in the bill's math was a wrong value for pi: 3.2. The real value is about 3.14. Indiana's House of Representatives passed it 67 to 0. By chance, a Purdue math professor was at the statehouse. He explained the problem to some of the senators. The Senate put the bill off, and it never became law. - The man who said no to a million dollars: In 2000, the Clay Mathematics Institute named seven famous unsolved math problems, with a $1 million prize for each. In 2002 and 2003, a Russian mathematician, Grigori Perelman, posted a proof of one of them, the Poincaré conjecture, on the internet. In 2006, he turned down the Fields Medal, one of the top honors in math. In 2010, the institute awarded him the $1 million. He said no to that, too. It is still the only one of the seven problems that has been solved.
