The Big Aha stories
- The real Colonel Sanders: In 1930, Harland Sanders began cooking meals for hungry travelers at his gas station in Corbin, Kentucky. His famous title isn't from the army. In 1935, Kentucky's governor named him an honorary Kentucky colonel. His chicken, made with a secret blend of 11 herbs and spices, caught on. In 1952, a restaurant in Salt Lake City, Utah, became his first franchise. In 1964, he sold the company for $2 million, and stayed on as its famous face, white suit and all. - How Gatorade got its name: In 1965, an assistant football coach at the University of Florida asked the university's doctors why so many of his players were struggling during games. A team led by Dr. Robert Cade found the answer: the players lost water and salts in their sweat, and nothing was putting them back. So they mixed a drink that would. They named it after the team, the Florida Gators: Gatorade! In January 1967, the Gators won the Orange Bowl. That same year, a deal was struck to sell the drink all across the United States.
